The Wild Way Home by Sophie Kirtley

The Wild Way Home is a cute middle grade novel that follows the story of Charlie as he finds himself stuck in the Stone Age after he ran away when he heard the news that his new baby brother Dara might die.

This character driven story focuses on Charlie and stone age Harby. Charlie meets Harby when he finds himself in the time of cavemen. Harby, just like Charlie, ran away from his problems and ends up nearly drowning in the river. Just like Charlie, Harby has a new baby sister but he lost her and is desperate to find her and keep her safe.

The plot of the story is pretty straight forward and I think a lot of young readers will find the banter of Harby and Charlie trying to understand each other very amusing. I had a good laugh every time they had to communicate and explain their words.

The two work together to find Harby’s sister, Mothga and help Harby get his memories back. Soon the two new big brothers find their inner streghtn and learn what it is to be an older brother and the responsibility it comes with — keeping your little sibling safe and love them dearly.

While the story as a whole was very cute, it didn’t stand out from your average middle grade story. I think this is a good book to give your children to show them the unrequited love that may come with siblings but also that you have to face your problems head on rather than running away — even if they are problems you cannot fix.

This book was given to me by Bloomsbury in exchange of an honest review. All opinions are my own.
